Thirunellai is one of the most old and historical agraharam (gramam/village) in Palakkad town. It has unparellelled importance attached. The gramam is situated to north of Ila river, which is starting from south side of Palakkad town. Sri Hariharaputhra, Poorna and Pushkala are the grama devatha. There are two temples in this gramam.

First one is located on West end of gramam and the other is located on East end of gramam. The most important feature of this gramam is the Ganga Kadavu. It is historically known as Sri Chandrikapuri Ganga Gattam/Ghat. It is a undying fresh and holy water source which is belived to be formed a 1000 years ago, with gods grace.

The temple on the west end is situated to north-west end of Ganga kadavu. This temple is very old, dating back to the gramam existence. Ancestors of the villages are belived to have build the gramam around 700 years back. The prathishta of Hariharaputhra Swamy at East end temple was done at that time.

The temple on the east end has history attached to it, which cannot be understood. Approximately 500 years ago the west side of gramam was ruled by Palakkad King. Near to the Siva-Vishnu temple in that area Lord Hariharaputhra along with Poorna and Pushkala were born as swayambhu (self-born from earth). The villages without delay constructed a temple in the place and started worshipping.

The puja and routines of both temples are based on Vaishnava aagama sasthram. The main festivals of the gramam are Brahmotsavam (starting from Chithirai month uthram nakshathram) and Sasthapreethi (celebrated on third saturday of Margazhi month).

Vaigaana aagama dictates that after 12 years, if required a Asta bandhana Punaprathishta and Mahakumbhabhisheka can be performed to maintain the chaithanya (power) of the temple deity.

There were lot of repairs that need to undertaken in both temples. A Jeernotharanam was also required to be done. A new agrashala was also planned to be constructed in the West end temple. The wheels of the Chariot of Grama Devan was so weared that it was also decided to be changed.

After these were done, Punaprathishta Kumbhabhishekam and related Deva Arooda Parisheelana (Deva Prashnam), Verpadu Homam were also required to be performed. A group was formed headed by Veda Sanskrit Pandit, Priest and Acharya Brahmashri Anantha Narayana Sasthrigal (Ambi Vadhyar).

The Mahakumbabhishekam were conducted very well as per plan on 1990 April 27th. Sri Hariharam Trustee, Sri Viswanathan, Sri Sahasranaman along with all villagers joined hands to perform the Kumbhabhisheka of the temples.

Sri M.K.Sahasranaman recalls the events of the Kumbabhishekam. In his words:

"In the history of Thirunillayi Village, the year 1990 would be remembered as one of the most important one. It was the cherished desire of our villages and other devotees to conduct a Maha Kumbabhishekam in Sri Poorna Pushkala Sametha Sri Hariharaputhra Swamy Temples. Preliminary to Maha Kumbabhishekam, a DEVA PRASNAM was held and in this, 27th April 1990 was fixed as the most auspicious date to conduct Maha Kumbabhishekam.

The vedic rituals relating to Maha Kumbabhishekam was commenced on 24th April 1990, with a Gramapradhakshinam by all Vedic scholars and Villagers. The vedaparayanam by renowned scholars from all branches of Vedas lasted for four days followed by enlightening and enchanting discourse, music etc.

Maha Kumbabhishekam was conducted on 27th April 1990 which was considered the most auspicisous. Devotees in large numbers attended the function in a well disciplined and religious manner. Divinity and devotion pervaded the atmosphere through. The high degree of devotion and dedication in the minds of thousands of devotees combined with the divine grace added to the sanctity and serenity which made the occassion most memorable and unforgettable, the divinity thrill and the bliss had to be experienced to be believed.

The Vedic scholars were then honoured, followed by Annadhanam to all devotees who attended the function...."

The grama samooham which is collecting donations from villagers for Nithya Puja, Ratholsavam, Sasthapreethi etc., are managing the activities well and effective. Among many Ayyappa temples which we have visited recently and maintained well, this is also one among them.

This year (1991) 27th April will be celebrated as Kumbabhishekam day. In May month Ratholsavam will also be celebrated.

An important note must be made along with this. Last year during Kumbabhishekam photo of Ten Handed Sri Hariharaputhra along with Poorna and Pushkala was donated to this temple. Thillai Anthanar Late Rama Ganesha Deekshithar who published this photo is gaining acceptance across the society. This photo has made the Kalyana Thiru Kolam of Ayyappa more famous making Deekshithars dream come true.
